It is interesting, too, to look at, and remember the words of those sisters of Lazarus today. Usually when we are thinking about Mary, and Martha, we think only about the passages that are read at the time of a feast of the Mother of God, where Martha is working in the kitchen, and Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus.

For beginning on Tuesday, the hymns and verses of this week’s services recall that Lazarus, “the friend of Christ,” died and is going to be raised. On Friday evening, the eve of the celebration of the resurrection of Lazarus, the forty days of Great Lent officially end. Lent is over! Only Holy Week and Glorious Pascha remain. We’re almost there!

A sincere but inexperienced person begins to believe that the thoughts of this or that Christian or even a priest is the truth said by God. If you do not react quickly to this delusion you run the danger not only of getting lost in the spiritual maze but also of breaking away from the Orthodox Church.

The Deacon says to all present, “In the fear of God and with faith, draw near!” and Eucharistic participation is expected from all—if not in fact, then at least in theory. (The Fathers, being realists, knew how little theory and fact sometimes went together!)

The primary message is that though our God is powerful and wise enough to do all things necessary for our salvation, He will not force Himself upon us for He is meek and lowly of heart.

But who is to work for the spread of the Orthodox Faith for the increase of the children of the Orthodox Church? Pastors and missionaries, you answer. You are right; but are they to be alone?

For in that single moment on the steps of the church, Mary was both changed in herself, and found worthy in the eyes of the Lord. Her response was entirely in character: with perfect freedom and perfect love, Mary turned the whole of herself to God - her heart, her body, her very life.
